This land was cleared in the 19th C for the purpose of dairy farming and as a part of the clearing of 'THE BIG SCRUB' ... [LINK]. The Big Scrub was the largest area of subtropical lowland rainforest in eastern Australia. To some extent there would have been 'cedar getting' on this land. Basically, clearing was carried out with an axe alone with trees being 'ring barked' as an expedient way of clearing the land quickly. The dead trees standing here are evidence of that methodology.
HJ AKA Jack Bower and his wife 'Bessie' took up residence on this property in 1919 and carried on the family tradition of dairy farming with jersey cattle until the late 1960s.
